Congratulations to Serious Goalkeeping Academy goalkeepers Alexat and Ruby-Anne for winning a gold medal in the NSSL U14 Tier I Indoor Championships this weekend.
Both girls play for Halifax County United and split time in the semi-final and final games on Sunday.
In the semi-finals HCU faced a strong and aggressive Suburban FC Team. Ruby put in a steady first half performance against some strong physical challenges. The score was 1-0 at half-time for Suburban after a great one-time redirect from a cross at close range.
The second half saw the momentum swing as HCU poured on the pressure and came back to score two unanswered goals. Alexa made a few key saves during the half to maintain the HCU lead.
Pressuring late in the game for the equalizing goal, a Suburban player broke free on a breakaway only to see her point blank shot saved by the outstretched right leg of Alexa.
HCU then went on to score one last late goal to take the game by a score of 3-1. The strong goalkeeping of the HCU team was definately a factor in the victory.
The finals were then played later that day against first place Halifax Dunbrack who gained direct entry into the championship game via a first round bye.
Ruby was again the starting goalkeeper for HCU and played another steady half of soccer to see her team take a 2-0 lead into half-time.
The first half played pretty much the same as the second with HCU in charge by 3-1 score late in the game. Alexa was again called upon to make a few routine saves with the final score finishing 4-2 and HCU taking home the gold.
That now makes it 5-5 for the Serious Goalkeeping Academy and its goalkeepers in the recent MISL and NSSL indoor soccer championships. Every team that has fielded a Serious Goalkeeper has gone on to win the gold medal. Coincidence? The only exception being when two teams have faced off in the finals and both teams have field our goalkeepers!
We have won gold in:
- MISL U12 T2B Girls
- MISL U12 T2A Girls
- MISL U12 T2A Boys
- MISL U14 T2A Boys
- NSSL U14 TI Girls
It will be interesting to see how our goalkeepers do the rest of the way as more NSSL Championship games are played this weekend and next.
Well done to all the goalkeepers. You have trained hard and it is showing in your performances. The coaches are extremely proud of all of you!
